Most of us have a hanging planter or two outside to add beauty to our porches and patios. Here are some plants, like Pothos and Ivy, hat do the same, only indoors!
Hanging plants can brighten windows, add interest to starkly furnished rooms or bare walls, and soften corners. Here are some of the best plants for hanging containers.
Golden Pothos (Scindapsus aureus): These plants have gorgeous heart shaped, variegated leaves with splashes of creamy yellow. They prefer bright indirect light, and should be watered only when the surface of the soil is dry. There is also a variety called "Marble Queen" which has splashes of white rather than yellow and a "Neon Pothos" which has lime green leaves.
Swedish Ivy (Plectrantus australis): An old fashioned favorite, these are fast growing plants with glossy green leaves and square stems. They prefer bright indirect light and moist soil. Pinch back to keep bushy, and put the cuttings in water-they'll root practically overnight!
Purple Passion Vine (Gynura sarmentosa): This fun plant has fuzzy purple leaves. They like bright sunlight and moist soil. Be sure to remove the bright orange flowers before they open-they smell like rotten meat!
Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum): Another favorite, this plant has arching, spear like leaves that can be variegated or all green. Plantlets form at the tips of the leaves. They like bright, indirect light and moist soil.
English Ivy (Hedera helix): This old fashioned favorite is available in all green or variegated varieties. They love bright sunlight and the soil surface to be allowed to dry out before watering. Mist occasionally in winter.
Burro's Tail (Sedum morganianum): This plant is a succulent with thick fleshly leaves. It loves bright, direct sunlight and should be allowed to dry out before watering. Be sure to hang this one up where it won't be brushed against as the leaves are fragile and fall off easily.
Arrowhead Vine- (Syngonium podophyllum): This plant has large, arrow shaped leaves and comes in a variety of gorgeous colors, from bright green to a muted pink. They like bright, indirect light. Allow the soil surface to dry out before watering. A very easy houseplant to grow.
Nerve Plant (Fittonia verschaffeltii): This plant has small oval leaves veined in either red or white. It likes bright, indirect sunlight and moist soil. If allowed to dry out, the entire plant will collapse rather dramatically, but it will revive if watered thoroughly as soon as discovered.
Wandering Jew (Zebrina pendula): This plant has arching, ovate purple and green leaves. It likes bright, indirect light and the soil surface should be dry before watering.
