Happy Memorial Day! This is the unofficial beginning of summer and Mother Nature knows it! It's a steamy 86 degrees here and my plants indoors and out are loving it! Your houseplants should be showing signs of new growth-once that growth is firmly established you'll want to get in the habit of pinching some of it back to promote full, bushy growth habits. Some houseplants such as Coleus, absolutely must be pinched back regularly or they'll get very leggy. This is also the time to put your houseplants outdoors if you want to do so. Just remember to set them in a shady spot and gradually move to a brighter one. Never put houseplants in direct sun unless they are cacti or desert succulents. The plants will burn under the hot sun. Remember, most houseplants are tropicals native to sun dappled rainforests and the like. Speaking of hot weather, take note! If you've got your AC's going or plan to soon, make sure none of your houseplants are nearby as they won't like the cold draft. That said, they do tolerate the cooler air just fine as long as you remember that air conditioned areas are very low in humidity and mist regularly. If you live in a hot, dry climate, you'll also want to mist regularly to keep spider mites away. They love hot dry air!
I hope you all have plans for a fun, relaxing holiday weekend. The garden centers and nurseries will be doing tons of business for sure!
